Being able to participate in our government is a cornerstone of American democracy. To help ensure the next generation understands this vital civic duty, Girl Scouts of Colorado is hosting a special workshop, "Foundations of Democracy: Exploring Civics and Government" on Sunday, Sept. 7, 1:15 to 4 p.m. at Longmont Fire Station #3 (1000 Pace St., Longmont, CO 80504.)
This event will give Girl Scouts a hands-on opportunity to learn about the foundations of civic knowledge and leadership and will feature Lafayette Mayor JD Magnat as a special guest speaker.
The workshop aims to help girls understand what it means to be an informed citizen and how the U.S. government works. Participants will explore different government roles, learn how a bill becomes a law, and create their own mock bill. Mayor Magnat will share his experience in public service and discuss how citizens can help shape their communities.
"We’re empowering the next generation of leaders and future government officials at Girl Scouts," said Breann Grell, director of corporate programs at Girl Scouts of Colorado. "This event is a great way for girls to get a head start on their civic education and be inspired by local leaders like Mayor Magnat."
This event kicks off the launch of a new patch program, Foundations of Democracy, which teaches youth from kindergarten through eighth grade about the importance of being an educated citizen and voter.
