Being able to participate in our government is a cornerstone of American democracy. Girl Scouts of Colorado is hosting a special workshop, "Foundations of Democracy: Exploring Civics and Government" on Saturday, Nov. 15, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Sleeping Giant School (40250 Giant View Dr., Steamboat Springs, CO 80487) to help ensure the next generation understands this vital civic duty.
Girl Scouts will get hands-on opportunities to explore different government roles, learn how a bill becomes a law, and create their own mock legislation. Routt County Commissioner for District 1 Angelica Salinas will share her experience in public service and how citizens can help shape their communities.
"We’re empowering the next generation of leaders and future government officials at Girl Scouts," said Breann Grell, director of corporate programs at Girl Scouts of Colorado. "This event is a great way for girls to get a head start on their civic education and be inspired by local leaders like County Commissioner Salinas."
This event continues the launch of a new Foundations of Democracy patch program. This patch teaches youth from kindergarten through eighth grade about the importance of being an educated citizen and voter.
We Are Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs from coast to coast, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.
