Kiewit Corporation, one of North America’s largest and most respected engineering and construction organizations, has partnered with Girl Scouts of Colorado to present Build Like a Girl, an event designed to introduce young women to the many exciting career opportunities available in the construction and engineering industry.
Taking place on Friday, April 19, at Kiewit’s training center (2551 Picadilly Rd, Aurora), the event will feature interactive demonstrations and hands-on activities led by some of Kiewit’s most successful female employees. Girl Scout Brownies and Juniors (kindergarten through fifth grades) session is 9-11 a.m. and Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors (middle school and high school) session is 12-2:15 p.m.
More than 100 girls in grades 2-12 will have the opportunity to work with metal, concrete, and heavy machinery, while use sharpening their critical thinking skills. Girl Scouts will leave Kiewit with an exclusive Build Like a Girl patch and newfound inspiration from women within these roles.
"Girl Scouts is all about building girls’ confidence, giving them opportunities to try new things, so they will discover their passions and ambitions,” said Girl Scouts of Colorado CEO Leanna Clark. “It’s no secret that the construction industry has historically been dominated by men. As girls see more women breaking into and leading in the skilled trades, they can see themselves in these essential careers. Empowering girls to go for what they feel passionate about, but perhaps have previously been deterred from due to societal norms, is critical to leveling the playing field. At Girl Scouts of Colorado, we believe we must create more opportunities for girls to learn about the wide array of possibilities for their futures—and the skills, education, and training they’ll need to get there."
We Are Girl Scouts
Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs from coast to coast, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.
