The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the world. Not only do Girl Scouts practice business skills when selling cookies, but they earn troop proceeds to help fund their next adventure, whether it be camping, traveling to another state, or helping those in need in their community.
The Hometown Heroes program was created so Girl Scouts would practice philanthropy and community service through the cookie program. Each Girl Scout troop chooses an organization they consider to be community heroes and they would like to receive their donated cookies. Recipients are “heroes” in the community such as non-profit organizations, shelters, firefighters, local military groups, blood banks, or food banks.
On April 13 from 9:30 to 11 a.m., 20 local Girl Scouts will visit the Denver Health Paramedic Division operations garage (675 Acoma St., Denver) to deliver 168 packages of donated Girl Scout Cookies. Daisy Troop 67335 and Junior Troop 67331 chose Denver Health Paramedics as their Hometown Hero for this year’s cookie season. Denver Health has also created several activity stations for the girls to participate in during their visit, including an ambulance tour. Denver Health Paramedics will also guide them through a first aid training, which will help toward the Girl Scout Daisies (K- 1st grade) earning their Safety Pin and Girl Scout Juniors (4th-5th grade) earning their First Aid Badge. COO of Denver Health and Girl Scouts of Colorado Board Member Kris Gaw will be in attendance as well as Girl Scouts of Colorado CEO Leanna Clark with her rescue dog, Sabe.
“Denver Health Paramedics relentlessly serve the people of Denver responding to nearly 130,000 911 calls for emergency medical services in a year,” said Denver Health COO Kris Gaw. “It’s wonderful to see these scouts recognize their work and show their gratitude through the Hometown Heroes program.”
In addition to the Hometown Heroes program, Girl Scouts of Colorado donates cookies through the Gift of Caring program. In the Gift of Caring program, customers can purchase packages of cookies that Girl Scouts of Colorado delivers to the military, both local and overseas, and to local charities on behalf of our Girl Scout troops and girls. Last year, more than 130,000 packages were donated to military, helpers, and heroes through both Hometown Heroes and Gift of Caring programs.
“Because giving back is a guiding principle in Girl Scouts, our Hometown Heroes and Gift of Caring programs are a great way to support young entrepreneurs and give back to your community,” says Girl Scouts of Colorado CEO Leanna Clark. “Girl Scout Cookie season is a win-win when we all join in!”
