Girl Scouts of Colorado summer camp offers girls the opportunity to discover their wild side -- unplugged, untamed, and it makes for an unforgettable growth experience. Girl Scouts in Garfield and Eagle counties can get this experience thanks to a former long-time physician of Eagle and Glenwood Springs who embraced outdoor adventure and was an advocate for girls and women in leadership roles. Dr. Mary Jo Jacobs was the epitome of a caring rural community physician with skill and experience that reached across the local communities, the state and the nation.
Dr. Mary Jo Jacobs touched the lives of so many before her passing in September 2013 through her medical practice based in Eagle and Glenwood Springs, where she was known as a wonderful family physician as well as through her many other non-clinical, health-related contributions once she retired. Dr. Jacobs’ adult children continue to preserve her legacy with an opportunity for girls to attend Girl Scout camp with the endowed Mary Jo Jacobs, M.D., Memorial Outdoor Adventure Fund held at Girl Scouts of Colorado.
Girl Scout camp sessions are now posted at camp.girlscoutsofcolorado.org and registration opens on Jan. 23.
The application for the scholarship, which has been awarded 32 times since 2015, is open now and applications are accepted through Jan. 21. This scholarship is open to any Girl Scout aged 5-18 who lives in Garfield or Eagle counties and who wants to experience the joy and camaraderie of Girl Scout Camp. The amount of the scholarship varies based on applicants’ camp choice but has typically funded the full cost of camp. In 2024, it funded summer camp experiences for five girls.
The Girl Scouts who received the scholarship last year got to try things they had never done before like whitewater rafting, archery, and horseback riding while at Girl Scout camp.
