Long-term planning facilitates the ability to lead short-term Outdoor Programs with Girl Scouts. This volunteer position has a one-year term with the possibility of reappointment at the consent of both the volunteer and Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO).
Reports to: Outdoor Programs Team: Assistant Outdoor Programs Director and the designated Outdoor Program Director.
Outdoor Program Volunteers serve to support Outdoor Program Volunteer Directors for short-term outdoor programs, including, but not limited to: single day events, Day Camps, Troop Camps, Service Unit Camps, and Family Camps.
The individual who fills this volunteer position will gain a sense of accomplishment, develop transferable skills and connect with the community. Outdoor Program Volunteers receive a percentage discount on fees for their daughter/relative in the program they work with unless otherwise designated by Girl Scouts of Colorado or the Volunteer Outdoor Program Director.
Volunteers will receive training and orientation in their assigned positions according to their skill set and the needs of their role.
• Remain informed about and comply with the most current policies, procedures, and guidelines of Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). Including but not limited to those found in Volunteer Essentials.
• Complete training appropriate for this position as recommended by your volunteer program director.
• Lead programming with Girl Scouts both on and/or off GSCO property.
• Help recruit other volunteers to help run a specific Outdoor Program.
• Assist the Volunteer Outdoor Programs Director with tasks such as: registration management, purchasing supplies, planning programs, completion of risk management forms (ex: incident reports), marketing, financial reconciliation, and more.
• Follow GSCO and Safety Activity Checkpoints policies at all times.
• Follow State of Colorado Licensed childcare statutes as well as American Camp Association Standards as directed by Outdoor Programs staff and volunteer outdoor program directors.
• Maintain girl safety at outdoor and camp events.
Qualifications and Core Competencies – Required:
• Accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law and register as a member of GSUSA.
• Be an approved adult volunteer with a volunteer application, cleared background check, and volunteer interview on file with GSCO.
• Present a positive image of Girl Scouting to girls, volunteers and community members through effective communication, high personal standards of conduct and knowledge of the Girl Scout program and organization. Promote the benefits of Girl Scouting and the importance of making a personal financial contribution and volunteering time to GSCO.
• Willingness to learn about and work with adults and girls with diverse backgrounds/abilities.
• Current CPR and First Aid certification. Ensure an adult with the appropriate level of this certification required by Safety Activity Checkpoints is in attendance at the designated event.
Additional Competencies, Skills, or Requirements – Preferred:
• Experience or ability to lead groups in the outdoors.
• Ability to manage safety of girls in the outdoors.
• Outward Bound, NOLS or other outdoor leadership course.
• Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder.
• Attend Volunteer Program Director 101 Training (optional)
