The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest earned award by Cadette Girl Scouts in 6th through 8th grades. As the second highest award in Girl Scouting, Silver Award projects must be completed while the girl is a Cadette, or by September 30 of the girl's 9th grade year. Staff support is available to all members and volunteers and may be obtained through email to the following address: highest.awards@gscolorado.org. However, there is no official approval process at the council level. Approval for the Silver Award is the responsibility of the Girl Scout volunteer leader or advisor.
The Silver Award is not required for the Gold Award but earning it reduces the prerequisite from two Journeys to one for Senior or Ambassador levels. Ultimately, advisors have discretion in determining successful completion of Silver Award requirements.
Silver Award Requirements - Journey Guidelines
The prerequisite for the Silver Award is completion of one Cadette level Journey, including all recognitions and the Journey Take Action project. Adult Journey Guidelines are provided to help troop volunteers support the girls as they identify an issue and create a project that improves their neighborhood or community. A girl can choose to work independently and build a team to help her realize her goal, or 2-4 girls in the troop can work together. The award is earned by focusing on an issue important to the girls and building a team to design and implement the project. Through research and investigation, the project is put into action and girls demonstrate an understanding of sustainable change and the wider world. Additional details regarding Silver Award requirements can be found in the Silver Award Girl Guidelines. On completion, each girl will complete the Silver Award report form and turn it in to council.
Silver Award Requirements – Studio 2B Guidelines
Girls who are completing projects under the STUDIO 2B guidelines may continue under those guidelines. STUDIO 2B final reports, part of the Silver Award Packet, should be submitted as soon as the project is complete but no later than March 1, 2012.
The supporting materials, recognitions and focus books for Studio 2B have been discontinued by GSUSA and are not available at the Girl Scouts of Colorado shops. You may be able to order through GSUSA or check with your service unit for materials than can be borrowed. Consider following the Journey Guidelines if the STUDIO 2B prerequisites are not nearing completion.
Silver Award Recognition
Girls completing their Silver Award are eligible for individual recognitions. To be eligible to purchase recognitions, each girl must submit the Silver Award report form to a Girl Scouts of Colorado retail shop. The shop staff will be sure that that the achievement is recorded and that the girls receive their recognitions. Reports submitted electronically to highest.awards@gscolorado.org will be acknowledged. Please show that acknowledgement to the shop when purchasing recognitions. In addition, Girl Scouts of Colorado appreciates the opportunity to recognize all Silver Award recipients in the annual Highest Awards Celebration Program. For inclusion in the book, all paperwork must be received in a Girl Scout of Colorado retail shop no later than March 1. Those submitting their paperwork after the due date will be included in the program the following year.
If reports are not submitted, Girl Scouts of Colorado has no way to credit the girls with their achievement.
