Girl Scout Jamboree a great time

Submitted by Ruth E, & Lisa P.

Jamboree Committee

June 22, 2009 -- The Jacksons have hosted Girl Scouts on their ranch south of Glenwood since 1961.  Mrs. Louise Jackson has supported us by leading troops including extensive traveling, helping leaders and being on the Board and behind the scenes for many years since then.  Now we’re getting multiple generations of girls coming there for the Jamboree, with some moms and program leaders telling of their fond memories.  We have separate programs to teach moms and leaders camping skills, which will hopefully get more troops camping and more moms leading troops.  In any event, it’s a great time for moms and girls to spend time together outside their everyday schedules.

Girls learned good tent skills while moms worked together to figure out new tents. Some girls learned to lash rafts on Saturday and we could have a flag retirement ceremony that night. We floated the burning flags on the pond, sang songs and ate s’mores. The next morning during free time, the girls organized themselves to build a bridge using some of their new skills. The adults were very impressed.

Other programs involved learning about bears and mountain lions from Dan of the Division Of Wildlife, who brought bear skins and demonstrated how far a mountain lion can jump (30-40 feet on the ground, 14-16 feet into a tree!)  Girls made their own casts of various animal tracks and learned about the animals who made them.  We also learned how to identify a tree while blindfolded.  Adults heard an expert on plants describe those plants around us and learned the latest information on what plastics are safe to use in what ways.  Skye, a National Forest Firefighter, showed us her gear and talked about fires, good and bad.

We are very grateful to our volunteer staff, local professionals, retirees and ex-troop leaders who generously donate their time and expertise to help us all.  (We can always use your skills, even if you aren’t able to lead a troop.)  And a special thanks to all the girls and moms who came camping, some for the first time!  We’ll see you again next year.
