Cadette Girl Scouts end year with a paddle
Submitted by Andrea L.
Troop 1001
June 10, 2009 -- Girl Scout Cadette Troop 1001 ended the school year with a paddle… a canoe paddle, that is! This troop of 13 girls from Prospect Valley and Maple Grove elementary schools in Jefferson County, met at Bear Creek Lake State Park on May 28 to learn all they could about canoe etiquette, canoe strokes and canoe safety. Two certified instructors from Boulder-based Avid4 Adventure provided the canoes and paddles, the PFDs, the instruction and the fun!
Throughout the day, these Girl Scout Cadettes mastered a number of strokes and maneuvers and, at one point, even turned their canoes into modified Slip’n Slides. The girls learned how to rescue a stranded canoe and how to paddle a swamped boat.
Everyone agreed this was a great way to kick off their summer vacations.
