Colorado Girl Scouts celebrate their achievements at the Royal Gorge Bridge
May 12, 2009 -- On Saturday, May 9, more than 200 Girl Scouts from throughout the state gathered at the Royal Gorge State Park to celebrate a monumental occasion in their Girl Scout journey. In a ceremony dating back to the early years of Girl Scouting, these Girl Scouts crossed one of the best known bridges in Colorado, the Royal Gorge Bridge near Canon City, as the “bridged” from one level of Girl Scouting to the next.
The morning ceremony started off with singing and a flag ceremony conducted by Canon City Troop 12, who was bridging to Girl Scout Ambassadors, the highest level in Girl Scouting. As the participants crossed the bridge, they were greeted by sister Girl Scouts, members of Girl Scouts of Colorado's Board of Directors, Girl Scouts of Colorado staff and members of the senior management team, and their family and friends.
Bridging is an important transition in a Girl Scout’s life. A bridging ceremony is a defining moment when a girl becomes aware of her achievements and is ready for a new level of leadership. Walking over the bridge symbolizes the passage from something familiar to something new and exciting.
Girl Scouts in the Canon City area have proudly planned and put on this statewide bridging ceremony at the Royal Gorge Bridge for the last decade. Bridging ceremonies in Girl Scouts have taken place since 1927.
