Oldest living Girl Scout hails from Colorado, celebrates 102nd birthday!
At the young age of 102, Marianne Crowder is believed to be oldest Girl Scout still living in the United States. What makes Marianne even more special is she began her Girl Scouting career in Colorado Springs as a member of Troop 4 in 1918.
Marianne has a long and rich history in Girl Scouting. She earned her Golden Eaglet, the highest award in Girl Scouting that is now called the Gold Award, and learned life skills, such as sewing, first aid and cooking. Marianne also attended the Colorado Springs area’s first camp, Camp Vigil, in the 1918-1920 timeframe.
In her life story, Marianne remarks that Girl Scouting “filled a big need” for her and her family. Last March, the Colorado Springs council, Wagon Wheel, honored Marianne at their Women of Distinction Luncheon. Since that time, Marianne has continued to be honored by Girl Scouts in California where she now resides. In fact, at her recent birthday party, she received a basket full of cards made by Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from all over the United States and Canada. One card had a dinosaur colored on it, and another said “you’re so old you must have great stories to tell!”
