Silver Award celebration

Silver Award

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest earned award for Girl Scouts ages 12-14, the second highest in Girl Scouting. The requirements for the Silver Award are explained step by step in the Go For It! Girl Scout Silver Award binder insert, available in the council shop. Girls may begin to work on the prerequisites when they have bridged from Juniors, are in 6th grade or above and are at least 11 years old.

To begin work on the project itself, girls must be 12-14 or in grades 7-9. Silver Award projects must be completed by September 30 of the girl's sophomore year in high school. Contact Gwen P., the staff advisor at 303-607-4849 or 1-866-827-7033 with questions or concerns.

Earning the Silver Award

The basic elements of the award are life skills including leadership development, career exploration, self-development and service. This is not a competition but another path girls may choose to help strengthen their community and themselves. Earning the Silver Award is an individual decision made by each girl and can be a group/troop or individual project. The Silver Award is not required for the Gold Award.

Round Tables and Orientations

Round Tables are held periodicaly in Denver.  If there is a sufficint interst, it may be possible to schedule a seesion in your area.  The following dates have been set:

Greeley:   January 10, 2009 2-4 p.m. St Mary's Parish Hall
Denver:    February 10, 2009  6:30-8:30 p.m.
Denver:   August 25, 2009  6:30-8:30 p.m.

Leaders are responsible for approvals for the girls earning the Silver Award. Juliettes may make arrangements to work with a leader or contact council. A project advisor is someone who represents the organization, including Girl Scouts, the project is serving. It isn't required to have a project advisor, but it is recommended for a larger exposure to leadership styles and networking.

Troops may decide to work on a large project as a group, however each girl must have her own individual part of the project. Each girl fills out her own report and a troop adult turns these reports in when purchasing the Silver Award pins.

An effective way to present the pins is to award them at a troop or service unit event. The recipients' accomplishments need to be recognized and celebrated with their families and younger Girl Scouts.

Silver Awards are also recognized at annual Silver & Gold Award Celebrations, held each spring. All paperwork must be received by Council no later than March 31 to be included in that year's celebration. Those submitting their paperwork April 1 and later will be included in the celebration the following year. Advisors continue to have discretion in determining successful completion of requirements.
