Camping is a cornerstone of Girl Scouting, whether it be as a troop overnight or troop camp experience, or summer resident camp or summer day camp experience. At camp, girls develop independence, self-confidence and leadership skills while gaining an appreciation for nature and making lifelong memories.

  • Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts can start their troop camping experience through backyard camping adventures, day camp or parent/daughter weekends.
  • Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors can broaden their troop camping experiences through extended overnight and more rustic camping adventures.
  • Older Girl Scouts can also take on leadership roles at camp.

Girl Scouts of Colorado is proud to offer area Girl Scouts increased camping opportunities throughout the state. There are also places for troops and service units to camp at other times of the year, even during the winter!

2009 Camp Opportunities

***Day camp changes - During this time when service is at the forefront of our national agenda, Girl Scouts of Colorado is issuing a call for volunteers at day camp. The more volunteers who step up for the girls, the more spaces we will be able to offer for campers. While Girl Scouts of Colorado will still offer full range of day and overnight camp opportunities for girls throughout the state, due to the unprecedented economic climate, we will be cancelling two of 25 Denver-area day camp sessions for 2009, and several other sessions will only move forward if volunteers are secured. We must reduce day camp costs so that we can maintain a strong financial future for the organization that provides the premiere leadership experience for girls in Colorado. The best way to reduce camp costs is to increase the use of volunteers, so we ask you to please take the lead for day camp.

The following Denver-area day camp sessions have been cancelled for 2009:
o DC01 Cherry Creek State Park, June 8-12
o DC13 Bergen Park, July 6-10*** Read the full statement

Changes to the camp registration process

In response to complaints statewide and in an effort to be a responsive, service-oriented organization, Girl Scouts of Colorado is listening to our customers and making some changes in our procedures for summer camp registration processing. Our registrars are caring people who want to see girls get into their camp sessions of choice. The registrars make every effort to fill in missing information that they can find through other sources. While we share the sentiment that some of the information required on the form doesn’t appear to be critical, all of the information on the camp registration form is required by the Colorado Department of Human Services, Child Care Licensing in order for us to be licensed to run a camp. As a statewide organization, we must be compliant with the state policies. We do need the information, yet we want to help you get it to us in an easier way. No one wants girls to be disappointed about not getting into a camp session because their form was missing a number.

In an analysis of the most efficient way to obtain the necessary missing information, we find that with the statewide volume of incomplete registrations and the difficulty of reaching people via telephone these days, it is actually more resource efficient to mail the forms than to call. As a new, quicker solution, we are also exploring an e-mail notification system when an e-mail address is provided. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to integrate the best systems for Girl Scouts in Colorado. We promise to keep listening and trying to improve our service.

We hope your girls are excited about all of the new opportunities available through summer camp this year.

Resting camps

Please note: Girl Scouts of Colorado has decided to rest the day camp and troop camp program at Camp Genesee, 20 miles west of Denver, for the 2009 season. A wide variety of other Girl Scout day camp and troop camp experiences will be available to girls throughout Colorado.

Girl Scouts of Colorado has also decided to offer troop camping instead of resident camping at Meadow Mountain Ranch (MMR) near Estes Park for the 2009 summer. The primary reason for offering only troop camping at MMR this summer is that there are significant regulatory problems that need to be resolved before the property can reopen for resident camp. During the summer, we can safely offer troop camping while we work on the property to meet new regulatory requirements for resident camping. In making the difficult decision about camp programs for the summer of 2009, Girl Scouts of Colorado looked at four factors: the cost to open/maintain, safety, the number of girls impacted and the geographic location of the property. The number of girls who can attend resident camp in a summer at MMR is lower than at any other resident camp in the state. The three other resident camps throughout the state will be able to accommodate the girls who attended MMR. For a similar rustic camping experience, check out the programs available at Sky High Ranch. For a resident camp located in northern Colorado, check out Magic Sky Ranch.

All Girl Scouts of Colorado properties are being reviewed by a board-appointed property task force, and all property decisions will be made by the Girl Scouts of Colorado Board of Directors.

Girl Scouts of Colorado Camp and Events Update Regarding H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu), updated June 25, 2009

Girl Scouts of Colorado is monitoring the H1Ni Virus (Swine Flu) situation closely and taking appropriate steps based on guidelines established by the Colorado Health Department and the Center for Disease Control.

All Girl Scouts of Colorado events and camp sessions are moving forward as planned. Public health officials have not identified circumstances in Colorado that lead us to consider cancellations at this time.

If circumstances change and health officials deem safety to be a concern for our events or camp sessions, we will make the necessary decisions to protect the girls. If cancellations are necessary, we will inform participants and communicate the information to our membership through our Web site and e-mail.

As always, participation in Girl Scouts of Colorado activities is the decision of each individual girl and her family. Consistent with our standard event and camp cancellation and refund policies, if you choose to have your daughter not attend an event or camp session that has not been cancelled for safety concerns, we will not issue a refund. If circumstances change and we do cancel an event or camp, all registrants will receive refunds.

Our resident camp safety measures already include nurse-supervised head to toe assessment of all campers within the first 24 hours of each session. These procedures will be enhanced as necessary in accordance with recommendations from the Colorado Department of Health as circumstances change.

We always stress good health practices at camp including frequent hand washing and covering one’s mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing. The food preparation and serving process at Girl Scouts of Colorado camps will continue to meet the standards of the Colorado Department of Health for licensed childcare facilities. Additionally, on the recent recommendation of the Colorado Department of Health, Girl Scout camp facilities have been advised to disinfect all surfaces (beds, handles, sinks, faucets, counters, handrails, knobs, etc.) at the end or prior to the beginning of each session of camp.
