Girls experience leadership and democracy during election season

Girl Scouts of Colorado Offers Historic Leadership Events for Girls
August 23 – 29, 2008

With Denver hosting the Democratic National Convention in our state in August, we had an unprecedented platform for offering girls activities to make their voices be heard on the national stage, expand their civic knowledge, get politically engaged and develop their leadership skills -- all while having the time of their lives!

Building Leadership: Teaching Democracy: For politically enthused girls entering grades 10 to 12, this was a Girl Scout Leadership Experience in civic engagement and America’s democratic political system. Girls first participated in online learning and interaction in July and August and progressed to a six-day non-stop, non-partisan interactive program in the heart of the action surrounding the DNC in Denver. The experience culminates with more online advocacy, including watching the RNC, leading to the finale of the Inauguration of the next President of the United States.

Follow the journey of these girls by viewing their blog and check out photos of the week in the photo gallery.

Leadership & Democracy Daily Update

Day 1, August 25
Day 2, August 26
Day 3, August 27
Day 4, August 28
Day 5, August 29

Unconventional Women: This historic symposium united 3,000 women and 300 Girl Scouts to advance their political leadership and participation. This unforgettable day featured lively, creative and historic panels, keynotes, presentations and interactive media. GSUSA CEO Kathy Cloninger was a key guest. The highlight of the event came as the 300 Girl Scouts were led by Kathy in a song about the potential of their future leadership. Check out photos and video from the event.

Ms. President:
Brownies toured Young Ameritowne and stop at City Hall (at the Young Americans Bank) to vote for President Barbie. The White House Project along with Mattel Toys has released a President Barbie doll. Each of the President Barbie dolls represented a different "platform" with ideas to improve her school and community.

Lead On! Juniors learned about democracy while they played games, hosted a talk show and celebrated women! They searched the countries in International Towne (at the Young Americans Bank) for information about women leaders around the world including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Documentary and Celebration of the first African-American to run for President -- Shirley Chisholm:
A documentary was shown about the first African-American (a woman!) to run for President of the United States, Shirley Chisholm. Participants celebrated this woman who led with courage, confidence and character!

During this election season, please remember that Girl Scouts may not endorse a political party, candidate or non-Girl Scout related political issue and may not participate in any political activity that supports or opposes a candidate for public office. All Girl Scouts leadership and democracy events are non-partisan in nature and are in line with the policy of Girl Scouts of the USA. The Girl Scouts participating in these activities are observing and learning about the American political system. As a citizen, you are free to participate in political campaign events for the Democratic and Republican parties, but you may not do so in your capacity as a Girl Scout, and you should not wear your Girl Scout uniform. When you wear your uniform, you represent Girl Scouts, and when you represent Girl Scouts, you can not wear campaign buttons, display campaign signage, etc. Thank you.
