Girl Scout member tips for working with the media:

1. Spend some time in advance thinking about 2-3 key messages you want to communicate in a press release and in interviews. Your messages should be simple and strong and reinforce the Girl Scout mission. As a council, we want consistent messaging going to the media statewide. To help achieve this, Girl Scouts of Colorado asks:
  • staff, volunteers, troops, service units and/or girls to involve the council communications staff when they want to approach daily media outlets, television stations and radio stations in major metropolitan areas across the state with their positive Girl Scout stories.
  • If you are contacting neighborhood and weekly media outlets or community radio stations, feel free to move forward on your own, but please use the council communications staff as a resource if you need help and please keep us updated on resulting placements so we can brag about it via our Web site and publications, as well as to our board of directors, staff and members across the state.
Council communications contacts are the Director of Public Relations, Amanda Kalina, at 303-607-4844 or 1-866-827-7033, or the Vice President of Communications, Rachelle Trujillo, at 303-607-4822 or 1-866-827-7033. Feel free to work with area media to place listings about how and why to join Girl Scouting and let us know about your successful placements.

2. If anything potentially controversial or a topic matter you aren’t directly responsible for comes up in the course of any conversation with the media, please direct the media to our council spokespeople, the Director of Public Relations, Amanda Kalina, at 303-607-4844 or 1-866-827-7033, or the Vice President of Communications, Rachelle Trujillo, at 303-607-4822 or 1-866-827-7033.

3. If media show up unexpectedly at an event, don’t panic. This is a great opportunity to promote Girl Scouting and how we build tomorrow’s leaders. Do your best to accommodate them, involve girls in interviews when you can and answer questions that you know the answers to. All other questions should be directed to the Director of Public Relations, Amanda Kalina, at 303-607-4844 or 1-866-827-7033, or the Vice President of Communications, Rachelle Trujillo, at 303-607-4822 or 1-866-827-7033. Before the media leave the event, ask when the are planning to run the story and let the Director of Public Relations, Amanda Kalina, at 303-607-4844 or 1-866-827-7033, know so we can brag about your efforts.

4. If you have an issue with Girl Scouts and think you can go to the media to solve your problem, please think again. If there is a problem involving Girl Scouts, we should always try to resolve it internally rather than involving the media. Remember that the media like to sensationalize stories. When negativity is involved, they have ratings in mind, not our organization’s best interests. Please contact the council and we will work with you to solve the problem. Contacting the media will only bring light to a situation that will most likely cause embarrassment, safety issues, etc.

5. Remember this is Girl Scouts, not Adult Scouts. Let the girls tell the story and do the interviews whenever possible.

6. For more resources and tools on helping you send your story to local media outlets, see the resources section below. If you are interested in learning more about how you can best work with the media, contact the Director of Public Relations, Amanda Kalina, at 303-607-4844 or 1-866-827-7033, or the Vice President of Communications, Rachelle Trujillo, at 303-607-4822 or 1-866-827-7033, and we can help provide media training to prepare you for these situations.
