Girl Scout Week 2009

Girl Scouts of Colorado joined Girl Scout troops around the country to make the world a better place as they celebrated Girl Scout Week and the 97th anniversary of Girl Scouts from March 8-14 this year.

Girl Scout Week service and celebration

Helping girls discover themselves and how they can impact their communities is something that Juliette Gordon Low first envisioned. Girl Scout Week projects are part of a broader initiative by Girl Scouting to help girls lead by example in their communities and in the world around them. Here are just a few of the things girls did this year:

  • A troop from Colorado Springs planned a tea with past and present Girl Scouts at the Village at Skyline assisted living center. Each Girl Scout in attendance received their own memento tea cup. Younger girls interested in joining Girl Scouts were also invited.

  • Girl Scouts from Troop 1114 in Denver led the Pledge of Allegiance for members of the House of Representatives at the State Capitol on Monday, March 9 in honor of Girl Scout Week and the 97th anniversary.

  • The Fort Collins service center hosted an Open House to showcase their newly renovated service center. The community was invited for cake to celebrate 97 years of Girl Scouting and learn more about Girl Scouting in northern Colorado. All Girl Scouts in the area were invited to attend, as well as any girls ages 5 to 17 who interested in joining.

  • Another troop from Colorado Springs recognized a local hero in the community during Girl Scout Week. Troop 1754 delivered 150 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to their Hometown Hero, TESSA, on March 12 at 4 p.m. During the delivery, the girls of this troop also learned more about TESSA and the great work they do in the community to help women and their children achieve safety and well-being while challenging communities to end sexual and family violence.

  • In Grand Junction, Troop 126 planned their own event with a local photographer to earn the Photography Interest Project Award (IPA). The troop thought Girl Scout Week would be a great time to capture their Girl Scout memories. They also plan to put together an album to donate to the council illustrating their years of learning and fun.
